Sloshing induced damping in vertically vibrating systems

Abstract All aircraft are subject to a range of loading throughout ground and flight operations, which ultimately define the sizing weight structure. Active passive loads alleviation technologies provide an approach reduce dynamic arising from atmospheric gusts turbulence, leading more fuel-efficient designs. Within H2020 SLOWD project, fuel sloshing is being considered as method for alleviating in wings via increase effective damping. Recent work has transient response vertically vibrating, single degree freedom system coupled rectangular liquid-filled tank. This research revealed identifiable dissipation regions free vibration responses characterised by their own distinct equivalent damping ratio values. In this work, surface displacement been extracted high-speed camera footage during chosen regimes, representative decaying parametrically excited fluid. These results compared against fluid-structure numerical model based upon smoothed particle hydrodynamics, previously shown have good agreement with experimental response. Further analysis free-surface solution notes presence undesired travelling longitudinal wave. The discrepancy between experiment then used improve formulation, showing requirement modelling tension.
